  2. [blank paper, colors and pencils]  Take a moment read aloud Daniel 3 and have the kids draw the images that come to their mind. Color page: https://ministry-to-children.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ruth-coloring-page.pdf
  3. Watch the Story:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irThVpdeSXk

Overview
Bad things seem to happen all the time. When these moments come along for us it is easy for us to move from our foundational beliefs or Christian behaviors in search of something better or different.  In today’s story we are encouraged by Ruth as her foundation and status in that world slipped away. She hung close to her mother in-law even when she was encouraged to move on away from her family. The phrase in Ruth 1:16 has encouraged many of people especially through a popular praise song.  Be encouraged to spend a few moments reading through this short book in the Bible and discover how God rescues Ruth and changes the world through this one moment in time.

Discussion
-
Go around the room and discuss your first thoughts about the story.

Additional questions

  1. [Children] Retell the story in your own words?
  2. [Children - Adults] What are some qualities of a good friend?  What kind of friend was Ruth to Naomi?
  3. [Children - Adults] Just like our lives, the bigger picture in the story of Ruth leads to the birth of King David and then further down the line Jesus. How easy or difficult is it to consider our lives have a much larger impact than our lifetime?
  4. [Children] Can you name all the key characters in this story? What is the mother-in-law’s name?
  5. [Teens - Adults] Things are very different in our culture. It's difficult to get past the practices of that culture. What are somethings that just seemed weird? [things like gleaning for food, needing a relative to marry, depending on a male…] How hard is it to consider the purpose of the story through the story its self?
  6. [Teens - Adults] Discuss how the poor were taking care of durning this time and take a moment and find other examples in the Old Testament where this was practiced. [Chapter 2: Gleaning]
  7. [Teens] Aren't’ you glad we don’t live in the era described in the story of Ruth? When we discuss the character of a person what are some traits of Ruth that translates to today’s time?
  8. [Adults] If you were to think about one part of this story today, in the greater picture of God’s creation, what specifically stand’s out?
  9. Take a moment and pray a prayer of gratitude for God’s living presence in our daily lives.
