Having faith without having control or even knowing the outcome in a situation can be scary and difficult to press forward.  In some of our situations it is evident that what is taking place isn’t working and something has got to change.  In today’s story the Prophet Isaiah is experiencing the social pressures that come with immoral and selfish behaviors. It wasn’t uncommon for a prophet to come across as crazy and maybe not “all there” in a mental state.  As you read today’s lesson let me encourage you to take a few moments before or after today’s lesson and read chapters 1-6, maybe even from a study bible to help gain a better perspective on the setting.  Isaiah is facing a challenge from the Lord God to encourage the world to change and realign with Gods direction.

Discussion Guide
  1. Go around the room and discuss your first thoughts about the story.
  2. [Children] Retell the story in your own words?
  3. [Children - Adults] Who do you trust the most that you will move forward with directions without knowing the outcome?
  4. [Children - Adults] Do you think Isaiah was calm or scared at this moment?  Especially when the coal touched his lips.
  5. [Children] Describe the what you think the Angels looked and sounded like.
  6. [Teens - Adults] Did you notice that everything thing that “really” mattered to Isaiah was spoken the moment he entered his dream. In verse 5 Isaiah humbles and confess.   How do you think you might have behaved?
  7. [Teens - Adults] Have you ever been caught in a situation where, when caught, you confessed then quickly offered assistance on cleaning the kitchen/room/garage or even mowing the yard?  Discuss the response in vs 8 compared to vs 5.
  8. [Teens] In the story of Jesus we understand that salvation from our sins is a gift from God. It is because of this gift we are compelled to serve God and share his word.  If you have been baptized, describe the emotions and feelings you felt when you first understood this gift.
  9. [Adults] If you were to think about one part of this story today, in the greater picture of God’s creation, what specifically stand’s out?
  10. Take a moment and pray a prayer of gratitude for God’s living presence in our daily lives.
