Summary
Scary situations can have us spinning. It is tempting to search and react in situations because we feel the need to respond. Sometimes conditions can get so bad, and out of hand, all you can do is pray. Sometimes Prayer consists of a conversation with God, a fast (removal of a habit or food), or a combination of these things with song. In today's discussion, King Jehoshaphat is calling out to God for help in a situation that seems to have unrealistic hope in a positive outcome. He encourages everyone to join in a fast and pray out to God. Take a few moments this morning and read through 2 Chronicles 20 and see the behaviors that change the outcome.

Discussion Questions

Take a few moments and reach 2 Chronicles 20, discuss your first emotions and thoughts on the reading. Encourage the kids to draw a picture of things that come to mind. Ultimately, God is in control when we are not, and sometimes our worst setting has a cause for a song.

  1. [Children] What kinds of things do you do when you are upset or happy? Do you pray or sing?
  2. [Teens - Adults] What is your go-to music when you need time alone? Different emotional situations might cause for different music, discuss those for a moment.
  3. [Teens - Adults] Jehoshaphat seemed to be a leader of great wisdom. The Bible says he 'resolved' to inquire with God. Take a look at verses 2 - 14. What steps were taken before, and as he approached God with this situation? (Lord also means God in this passage)
  4. [Children] Did you know in the Bible God uses people to speak through? Sometimes the Bible calls them a 'prophet' or 'seer.' In verses 14 - 15, what is the name of the person God spoke through? And what did he say?
  5. [Children - Adults] In verses 19 - 21, this is the day the people of Juda and Jerusalem were encouraged to keep the faith and to believe what the prophets have told them. If they keep the faith, they will be successful. [21] Jehoshaphat wanted to encourage the people, so he appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him. Think about this how often do we use music to keep us going? What song keeps you in faith when faith seems lost?
  6. [Teens - Adults] What value does this story have on us today?
  7. How can we use it in action?
  8. What experience can you tell that would encourage us to keep the faith and trust fully in God?
  9. Take a few moments and ask for God to step in and rescue you or our nation from a situation. How do you plan to keep your dependence on God?
  10. Join us for service.
